"The Buffalo" - Marianne Moore

Contextualização

Marianne Moore foi uma poetiza modernista nascida no Missouri em 1887. Os seus estudos universitários foram em grande parte feitos nas áreas da Biologia e da Histologia. A poesia de Moore é maioritariamente descritiva e reflectiva, algo que se insere na corrente Modernista literária. “The Buffalo” pertence à colectânea “Selected Poems”, lançada com o encorajamento de figuras com oT.S.Eliot. O poema baseia-se na observação de objectos como pinturas, fotografias e outras formas de arte, que são de alguma forma traduzidas para linguagem literária. Este processo é conhecido como Écfrase e Moore utiliza-o para descrever minuciosamente na sua poesia os objectos que observa.

The modern

ox does not look like the Augsburg ox's

portrait. Yes,

the great extinct wild Aurochs was a beast

to paint, with stripe and six-

foot horn-spread—decreased
to Siamese-cat-

Brown Swiss size or zebu-

shape, with white plush dewlap and warm-blooded

hump; to red-

skinned Hereford or to piebald Holstein. Yet

some would say the sparse-haired

buffalo has met

human notions best—

unlike the elephant,

both jewel and jeweller in the hairs
that he wears—

no white-nosed Vermont ox yoked with its twin

to haul the maple-sap,

snow; no freakishly

Christian heathen, way-
laid by the Buddha,

serves him so well as the

buffalo—as mettlesome as if check-
reined—free neck

stretching out, and snake tail in a half-twist

on the flank; nor will so

cheerfully assist

the Sage sitting with

feet at the same side, to
dismount at the shrine; nor are there any

ivory
tusks like those two horns which when a tiger
coughs, are lowered fiercely
and convert the fur
to harmless rubbish.

The Indian buffalo,

led by bare-leggèd herd-boys to a hay

hut where they

stable it, need not fear comparison

with bison, with the twins,

Indeed with any/

of ox ancestry.

Encontramos várias referências a obras observadas por Moore como a pintura "Ajax" the John Steuart Curry ou o "Over-Drove Ox" de Thomas Rowlandson. As imagens são o ponto de partida para as descrições dos vários espécimes de bois e búfalos. Enquanto que no início do poema as descrições incidem mais nos animais "europeus", o Indian Buffalo é de entre todos o menos domesticável e mais natural e pujante. Os vários espécimes descritos colocam vários entraves à tradução, pois é difícil precisar numa primeira leitura a qual espécime as descrições pertencem assim como as suas interpretações se tornam confusas.
