When I translate one of your poems and I come across words I do not understand, I
always guess at their meanings. I am inevitably right. A really perfect poem (no one yet
has written one) could be perfectly translated by a person who did not know one word
of the language it was written in. A really perfect poem has an infinitely small vocabulary.
It is very difficult. We want to transfer the immediate object, the immediate emotion to the poem - and yet the immediate always has hundreds of its own words clinging to it, short-lived and tenacious as barnacles. And it is wrong to scrape them off and substitute others.

Words are what sticks to the real. We use them to push the real, to drag the real into
the poem. They are what we hold on with, nothing else. They are as valuable in
themselves as rope with nothing to be tied to.

Focussing on the excerpt of "The Tunnel" (itself a part of the longer poem The Bridge by H. Crane) starting with Whose head is swinging from the swollen strap?" and ending "Did you deny the ticket, Poe?" (p. 86), determine which would be the main translation problems and how could they be surmised under Gideon Toury's norms.
Optional: If you want you may present a translation into Portuguese of the above-mentioned excerpt by Hart Crane. Also, note that this is a poem full of references but a visit to this site might help: http://sites.jmu.edu/thebridge/category/the-tunnel/

T S. Eliot e a teoria do "correlativo objetivo"
Objective correlative
T.S. Eliot used this phrase to describe “a set of objects, a situation, a chain of events which shall be the formula of that particular emotion” that the poet feels and hopes to evoke in the reader (“Hamlet,” 1919). There must be a positive connection between the emotion the poet is trying to express and the object, image, or situation in the poem that helps to convey that emotion to the reader. Eliot thus determined that Shakespeare’s play Hamlet was an “artistic failure” because Hamlet’s intense emotions overwhelmed the author’s attempts to express them through an objective correlative. In other words, Eliot felt that Shakespeare was unable to provoke the audience to feel as Prince Hamlet did through images, actions, and characters, and instead only inadequately described his emotional state through the play’s dialogue. Eliot’s theory of the objective correlative is closely related to the Imagist movement.
Trabalho, rascunho
Contextualização
T.S.
Eliot redigiu os Quatro Quartetos entre
homenagem a um Mosteiro Anglicano do Século XVII) – “Little Gidding” –, celebra
Estrutura do
poema
‘’Little Gidding’’ é um poema longo composta
A linguagem
utilizada aproxima-se da linguagem falada no quotidiano. No entanto, o poema

Ash on an old man's
sleeve
Is all the ash the burnt roses leave. Dust in the air suspended Marks the place where a story ended. Dust inbreathed was a house- The walls, the wainscot and the mouse, The death of hope and despair, This is the death of air. |
Cinza

È
toda a cinza que deixam as rosas queimadas.
A
poeira suspensa no ar
Marca
o lugar onde uma história acabou.
A
poeira respirada era uma casa-
A

A
morte da esperança e do desespero,
Isto

At the recurrent end of

Na hora incerta que antecede a manhã
Ao

|
Tanto
texto.
Conclusão:
Little
